Balham Grove is a low rise housing scheme on a previous industrial site surrounded by older housing. The goal of the project is to give a feeling of community identity to the 50 apartments of the complex which would complement the earlier houses nearby. Being a low rise scheme, the buildings have large frequent windows and are clad in Iroko hardwood and green copper rainscreen to make them feel light and warm.
Creating a new mews allows the development of a community and shields the flats from traffic. The vertical circulation is taken out of the building’s interior so that passengers are given a more interesting experience while they ride the lifts. By sharing the lifts between two buildings, we have avoided long internal corridors.
